Personally I couldn't cope with clipons below the top clamp any more - was OK when i was 21, but have run them above the clamp for decades and don't regret it. Have gone to great lengths to make extender fork caps for the USD Kayabas. It does make fairing choice a pain, I admit, but I'll just have to work around that.
Watch out caning it with that pipe - you're gonna draw quite a bit of attention, some of it unwanted!
