How to resize and add a photo
« on: September 24, 2010, 21:20 »
RESIZING
There are lots of programmes that will reduce photo sizes - you may have Microsoft Picture Editor on your PC for example.  Similarly, Mac users can use iPhoto.

Alternatively, there is a freeware programme called irfanview.  It can be downloaded from http://www.irfanview.com/  and a straightforward tutorial can be seen here  Please use 800 pixels for the longest side of your photo when resizing, not 900 as suggested in the video.

Finally, you can do the job online - an easy to use tool is at http://www.picresize.com/.  After uploading your photo(s), press the Continue button and using step 2, Resize your picture and select the Custom Size option from the drop down menu. Set width to 800 and make sure you change the setting from percent to pixels
In step 3, select JPG quality to Good - NOT 'Better'
Then on the next screen 'Save to disk' to save the resized photo back to your computer.  It should be around 100KB and ready to attach to your post!

ADD A PHOTO OR DOCUMENT
Attachment
Click on 'Additional options' in the bottom left-hand corner of the 'Start new topic' box.
At the bottom of the list is 'Attach:'.
Click on the 'Browse' button to locate the file on your PC.
Select the file - its path will appear in the 'Attach:' box.

Then Preview and/or Post your message in the normal way.

Inline
Note that you can't simply copy and paste an image into your message!
If you wish to add an image inline, click on the 'Insert Image' icon.  This adds an 'img' code to your text.
Click between the two sets of square brackets, and type or paste the URL of the photo you wish to add.

For this to work, your image must reside on the web with its own URL - i.e. a web address, as usually displayed in your browser.

Just DON'T do what I did with IrfanView on Laverdapedia. There is a File|Save As option of "Set File Size to ", which I enthusiastically used, seemed to have a healthy saved file, but when I uploaded the saved file it destroyed the entire SMF thread! The postings appeared to be still there, but only a blank screen showed up for everybody who tried to view them. Have no idea why this happened but probably not a good thing to repeat...

Hello,

if you have MS Outlook, you can use it for reducing photos in size
I have Outlook 2000, can't promise it works with all later versions,
but I guess so. Disadvantage is, you can't choose the new size,
at least with my version.
Just click on the photo's icon with the right mouse button and
go to "Send to" >then there should be an option called "E-mail recipient"
or likewise (I have the German version). > An option should come up:
"Reduce all pictures in size", you say oK and the Outlook field for writing a mail
comes up with the resized photo in it. From there you can paste and copy
it and delete the outgoing mail or you can send it to yourself.
I just tried to downsize differerent pictures. Eg:
307 kb > 69 kb
1,9 MB > 80 kb
4,7 Mb > 79 kb
Seems to be no fixed rate in it but, always size like that comes out.

Ernesto

okay, so i just managed the 'big' step of resizing my pics and posting them as attatchments to the post.
now, is it possible to add my own pics inline, in the post itself?? if so how do i do it?

Hi Henry,

you can use your pics inside the text, but the main thing is, they have to be somewhere in the internet, not on your PC. You can use Picasa (Google), Myspace or similiar hosting systems, many of which do offer free space to store pictures.

In most cases, you can then go into that store, choose one picture, right-click on said picture and click on "copy link". Then go to this board, click on "reply" within a thread,

click on the 3rd button from left directly above the line of smilies, which will show something like [ img ]  [ / img ] (without the spaces...). You right-click in the center of that and click on "paste". The link of the picture should show up like this here (just without the spaces...):

[ img ] http://lh3.ggpht.com/_3v-U4SX8LCU/TKMTHPLfx4I/AAAAAAAACUc/4mAenWYyd_Y/s912/DSC_2557.JPG [ / img ]

if all done well, it looks like this:

1000 SFC 1985 #2934 currently under restoration

Rusty - the picture you posted is hosted by Google so you can use any size you like!

For the LaverdaForum Gallery, you'll find that anything more than ~2MB will time out during the upload process.  Being a computer, it doesn't tell you why it failed...just that it hasn't uploaded.

Here on the forum the limit is 200KB.
