Title: bears 2019
Post by: bevelman on February 28, 2019, 21:13
thought id start this off for red.as a few of you know i wont be racing this year due to a new job in the gas fields (2 on 1 off) spent a day at the bosses shed yesterday pulling the motor from the mule so red can give her the once over ,which got me thinking over the last 4 years how fortunate ive been to be involved as part of the redax team ,ive learnt so much from the boss ,allowing me as much shed time as i need(he loses money every time im there!) so a huge thanks to red and max i wouldnt have been able to fulfill  my wish to race without them-so much so that you guys will still have 2 scorches to ogle over as im letting red have the bike for the year so he can run 2 bikes in the team-hopefully will catch up with a few of you at the couple of meetings i can make as a pit bitch-hoping the team has the support of lav people as strong as it has been over the years-where else in oz can you watch a triple race  -and win-fantastic-cheers paul

Kind words Cougar and Bravo for sticking your Scorch into the fray - you're a champ mate.

Red and Max - I do not have enough words to describe their contribution to the world of Laverda and CLQ, suffice to say that without them we would have been in a much lesser place

Bravo to one and all and bring on 2019

Peter
ps: Who's the jockey/caring soul/well balanced unit?

Paul its not gunna be the same in some ways this year without ya racing but then again we will still have the fly in fly out rider to look after. Am sure that he will keep us as busy or more busier as he always finds some way to make work for Red and myself. The amount and level of engineering that has gone into the bikes is amazing and certainly way more advanced/refined that anything that we used to see in the past from any Laverda. I do remember how impressed the Italians were when they were over here at the level of professionalism and quality of engineering associated with the bikes let alone the set up at the Redax H.Q.
Bring on 2019 I say esp the Vic rounds where hopefully not only the Scorch bikes but there may be at least two other Redax engine triples out of track....even if one is a 120 though will be great to see how it goes up against Black Betty which is a trophy winner also.

Viva the Camira reborn Laverda's.

Well said, Paul. Always liked catching up with you at the race meetings. Hope you can make it down on a week off for one of the VIC BEARS rounds. Now, what can i think of to put in the back of Red's van to be transported to or from Qld ...  ;D ;D ;D

Onya Paulo.. always good to see you in the pit.. lots of enthusiasm and positive words. Just looking at the Redax 2019 February picture now.. gotta love those Redax bikes, and the efforts of the whole team.
Sure to be another great year for all I am sure. Hope to see some of it myself, and look forward to catching up with you when I do.

Paul your the real deal, I will always remember that weekend in Reds shed and your rescue mission that day and the late nights on my bike. Bet you get itchy on the coming race days. How are the road bikes coming along?

Well, the cats out of the bag now, so I might as well own up...

Hey Cougar, is it 1 up, 5 down or 1 down, 5 up.  Might take a while to get used to that extra gear..

With the Darwin round, Iíve not been there before.  As Croz once asked, which way do we go round, and whatís the lap record.

Just heading out the door for some more roadwork as I work on my match fitness.

Well said Paul and I wholeheartedly agree with Peter.

And was timely that I picked yesterday to drop over to the Redax shed as it's always a pleasure to share some shed space with Paul.
When I arrived, Paul already had the Mule's donk out on the bench and I was soon handed a pen and pad and instructed to jot down a long bloody series of numbers as Red fired off a heap of gauge readings while clocking the cams.

Today, the boss inspected and passed the crank and gearbox.  (thumbup)
That extended Redax output shaft has proven to be very successful in supporting the output gear and stopping the end of the main shaft and bush from chewing themselves out.

So, the cases were buttoned back up before beer o'clock.

While I continued with old bloody Dellorto business on another bench.
Well, until the beer fridge was opened.   8)

Great stuff pity your not going to be in the seat Paul but I am sure you will only need a sniff of those fumes in the pits to stimulate a late entry.
I am sure the energy required for the season will be met from all the team at Redax and I hope to join you all at the Victorian rounds provided I don't get lost in Europe riding around on my 1200  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Best of luck ;D

  Pauly
. Work getting in the way of a good time again. In Moranbah to start tonight thinking you might be here but no. Good effort on the bike for the past seasons. Lots of good shit happens in the Redax shed.
All the best for the Laverdas for 2019

Paul,

a HUGE thanks to you and Yogi (Belinda) for putting the effort in running  your LAVs the last few years.
I was magic to see you and your LAV out on the track and in the pits, they always brought a smile to my dial, and filled a great many memory cards with photos along the way.

As Peter has said, all with the superb support of Red and Maxene.

Cheers to Rick and Matt too.

Was certainly going well, but up against a quick rider in Royce Rowe. I met him and the team at the Manx GP a couple of years back. A bloody lucky fella too surviving the demolition of one of my local Authorityís lamp posts when he crashed. I think he plans to return again this year and have another go....

Lap times way down today so definitely a wet track. Fallen behind in the points in F4 a tad this weekend. No word on the DNF in R2 yesterday.

Quote from that thread on Adventure Rider yesterday, it's on a public forum so I hope I don't get the tell tails comments. Plenty here want to know so here it is.

Smarty threw the orange beast down the road into T1 in race 2 today(last race of the day).:muutt
I was on the inside of him so all good for me, but Jardine got run off track (along with a few others) which stuffed their race (No red flag)
He and his entourage were busily replacing all the broken bits as we left the track.:thumb

And Vince, that Laverda you were commenting on in that thread is standard paint for a 1978 Australian Laverda Jota. Shouldn't have a hydraulic clutch but.

That's racing - bound to have the odd off - Smarty's record is very good when it comes to keeping rubber side down. Bummer all the same - hope it isn't too severe.

Back from 1st session, Paul checks over his Redax-Scorch race bike, Rene. All is go!

I was on a job once with a young painter, we got chatting and he tells me he has one. I see a pic, a few years later my Pantah is having some engine work done and there is an Alchemy there as well. Same bike, same owner. A couple of years later I am at the NSW Ducati Club concourse and there is an Alchemy there, meet the owner. Danial, same bloke same bike. There isn't that many. BTW Blabb had one as well. It was called the Bunnings bike, it had a bunch of PVC plumbing tube attached. Don't remember why.

Got  back home about 4.30ish today top weekend and great ride there and back Good to see a roll up of Queenslands including Levo who came down for the Saturday on his RGS.
Paul seemed to have a good time helping out in the pits and emptying some Maroon cans along the way without getting busted. Tent City was kind of cool and only in Qld would someone think to bring a lounge chair :-)

Well done to Red for all the work on the Mule it was sounding sweeter than even and boy was it flying.
Lowy posted some great video and photos on facebook, good job

Oh and in case ya wondering what happened in the last race well if you look close enough you'll see some of the Mule's SC2 ...............bloody Ducrappies anyways Smarty did an awesome job in not binning it..

Trip home was a bloody beauty, pulled into Uralla for brekkie this morning and bumped into  Andrea,  the world famous Guzzi Salt man and racer was there on his Mk 4 Lemans so we had an awesome run down Thunderbolts ( great fun and worth hitting the dirt section again ) and into Singleton, there we parted company as he headed down the coast and I headed back via the Putty only had to pass one car what a bonus.

great weekend, was more tired after doing pit duties than riding!smarty rode smart and hard and the mule loved it,dont know how he kept it up after being punted by the duke, was a fairly large excursion on the dirt-but he brought home some points, words out on the boss now, very generous with mechanical help and advice ,seems to be a build up of race bikes and bits passing through the shed :o

Brett texted me Monday and mentioned heading off. My guess at this Time of year he would be heading past where I am and crossing the Queensland border at Goondiwindi and heading to Roma and Mt Isa. That Goodawindi Roma bit has these things called Paddimellion Holes, there natural depressions in the ground 3 or 4 mitres wide and a mitre deep. They just bitumen right over them and there hundreds on that road. If you're not on the pegs it can knock the wind out of you, add the Cattle grids and this is one tough mother of a ride. And that's probably only 200ks of who knows how many thousands of ks in total. My guess at least 3000 and a bit kilometres each way.

Best of luck to Red and the team, and to Brett. An epic travel gig that one, and Darwin can be fantastic at this time of the year.
Riding up the inland Qld route, last time I was there the Landsborough (?) was dirt, a real mongrel. It was more popular to do the Barkly from Townsville to Three Ways. We did the Barkly Tableland once coming south from Booroloola, the good old days.

Ö enjoying a coldie after putting in 1100ks the last 100 in the dark Ö Life doesnít get much better than this.

Nice, you're half way there Iron Butt. Only 2000 km to go.  :D

Although you're a braver man than me travelling on a bike in the dark in outback Australia. I'd have been shitting myself that a big old kangaroo would suddenly lob in front of me. Bloody unpredictable things those 'roos. Not to mention feral cattle.

Last time I was out that way on a bike I was trying to get to Camooweal before dark (coming from 3-ways in NT)`. But the sun goes down pretty quickly in those latitudes, and I found myself riding in the dark. After narrowly dodging a couple of big skippys, I figured it was too risky to continue. So I called it quits for the night about 100km short of Camooweal and slept under the stars on top of a heap of crushed rock (blue metal) that was presumably there as material for road maintenance. Reason I climbed up and made my bed on the gravel heap was because of the herds of feral cattle wandering about. Figured I'd be less likely to get trampled. I could hear the buggers mooing and crashing through the scrub during the night. One of the coldest nights I've had sleeping outdoors. Temp must have got down to nearly zero C, despite being 35 during the day.

Iíve done some insane rides in those parts. Night riding and huge daily km. Craziest was probably Cairns to Melbourne in 1974  on a DT3 360 Yamaha trail bike with clipons attached above the top triple. A 6v headlight to boot. One hell of a trip. Bike never missed a beat.

Breaking news from Darwin
Smarty has converted two class poles into two class wins and second outright in a field of 15 combined F3,F4 and F5 bikes. Also managed to be near his best time from last time hear.

Lisa is also doing an awesome job she shaved a massive 5 seconds of her best qualifying lap.

Third race for the weekend again saw 86 on the front row Smarty got the hole shot and ended up having an epic dual with an F3 Ducati for the lead only to be beaten in the end. However again first in F4 and second in the race. The mule is flying this weekend with zero issues over the last 2 days.

Lisa again picked up her pace in this race and shaved yet another second off her best lap time.

Matty on the Panagali R FE ( 1299 final edition ) was light years ahead of everyone in F1 he was seeing 305 plus down the straight.

So this far this weekend itís been awesome 😎

Title: Re: bears 2019

Lisa is Smatryís lady who has started racing a Monster which was fettled at joeyís chop shop, then at Ricondi central but then sorted by Team Redax....coached by the throttle whisperer and on track side fettling by mwa.

Matty is the owner of the van Red drives he races a Panagale R FE in F1 and a Triumph 675 which he also punts around heís bloody fast.

Oh and we sure are missing Cosi and Joey

On another note one of our competitors with a Thruxton R dropped the head off one of his inlet valves trying to match the pace of the mighty Redax Laverdaís

Bravissimo! Big points boost from this round for sure. Bummer the Thruxton had a DNF, but it certainly helps the Redax team to get a few up on the opp. Give my best to the team, Brett.

305 on the straight ... fookin hell! They've come a long way since bevel days them Ducs!
Title: Re: bears 2019
Post by: Brett on August 04, 2019, 04:00
So itís 4 out of 4 for the weekend with zero reliability issues the Mule just kept on getting better all weekend.
Reckon itís gotta be the best 180 triple ever built on the planet
Was a cracking race with the big block Ducati (F3 bike ) for a lot of the race before Smarty stretched the miles long legs and motored past at the end of the 1.2 k straight

Lisa went great again also sheís come a long way this weekend thanks to the Throttle whisperer.
Hmm wonder if heíll make a come back as is great having him around.

Matty again blitz the F1 boys on his FE and he looks awesome going into the hairpin dangling his left leg out to get the beast to turn in. Seems that is the hard part on them suckers getting them to turn.

And in the TT2 challenge cup brought his Triumph home in a commendable 6 not far behind the leading bunch after he started off the back of the grid.

So weíve clawed back a whole bunch of points now so Marc Bellestro is only a mere 35 or so in front now.
Bring on PI and make sure all you Vicís turn up to see and here the awesome Redax Laverdaís on track

Not sure if it is the same bike ...... but it is a 1288 raceCo and it is the real deal. I've been following him on Instagrunt and he has had nothing but praise for the Redax team and the help they have given him ....... and he is sure impressed with the Redax Laverda ......

Some great shots. Thanks Brett (and or whoever else contributed the pics)!! Love the buffalo horns on the womens' trophy!

That variable cam timing on the trumpet looks innaresting. Looks a lot like my old Bosch points ignition advance unit from the SF! Racing is hard on any motor, new or old tech.

I'll be in Darwin for a one-off gig with the band in three weeks - shame it didn't coincide.

That variable cam timing on the trumpet looks innaresting.

Was thinking the same thing. Also wondering how valve clearance adjustment is achieved. Couldn't see any adjustment device on the rockers. Must be some kind of shim on top of the valve stem.

That's the end result of cartwheeling at 250KPH not a Lav rider was kind of OK last we heard.
Yep shims under the rockers sit on top of the valve stems.

So Philip Island next weekend another long drive for Red but for me its only a mere 1000K down the road think I'll take the RGS as my riding buddy for PI will be way too jet lagged and his Lav will still be in the UK so may as well do it in luxury with a fairing  :D

Itís been a cold weekend thus far and yep the flash new tyre covers are doing their job quite nicely. Smarty has brought the Mule home first in class for the two races thus far times are well down for most of the fields except for Bayliss and a few others. The wind is making things a wee bit tricky it seems tail wind down the main straight for Saturday meant that was hitting the rev limiter but round the back it make is well tricky I hear. Lisa is out also under the watchful guise of the throttle whisperer who again has made the trip to ensure that she is in the best and most capable hands. Had to help flashion an engine cover for the right side though the throttle whisperer did most of the work. Again he is in high bemoans and rumour has it he will have more than one rider to look after later in the year it seems he will be a busy Chappy.
Smarty also has his R1 here and seems to be leading that class also this weekend... he has to borrow the throttle whisperer from Lisa to help out there but keep that one quiet please.
Only dampener on the weekend thus far was Marty butting the Panagale down at MG, we had been telling him earlier to be a bit more like Rosie ( as he was in Darwin ) but not like that. Rider OK except for a broken foot but not so the right side of the bike.

Good to see some of the Vicís make it out to the track MT and Ari Jack came out on the drummer... bugger and Geoff his tricky Bimoto with a ladder handing off the front, and yep Serge, Rowdie, Hooksie and a couple of others popped in during the day. Hopefully Rowdie got some good shots as we saw him armed with his camera.

Some of the Roaring Sporties have made an appearance at this round and rumour has it there will be a whole lot more next year In BEARS doing all the rounds so good to see some hardly dangerousís on the road.

As always picís posted later or might send some to you Mark as he has a knack of posting them for me.

Yeah Brett, it was a real shame to see Matt Edwards drop the Panigale at MG Corner.
Matt is a very talented and fast rider, a great supporter of BEARS racing and friend to Laverda folk. Glad he is ok.

I don't often get down to Southern Loop as it is difficult to get good shots with a 300mm lens from behind the fence. Nevertheless, you get a good idea of how picturesque the Phillip Island circuit is. The wind at this point was doing it's best to put Smarty into the surf.

Post by: Brett on August 26, 2019, 23:06
Sunday started out as wet in the morning, we had the wets on the number 2 bike it didnít go out on warmup  as there was a small electrical issue. So race before ours some lads come back in and said it was still wet at the back of the track so we sent Smarty out on the wet bike. However as he took off down pit lane he already had the feeling it may have been the wrong call as down pit straight was dry. On the sighting lap he also noted not much wetness out the back of the track. He got a great start and was well out in front of the pesty Triumph which was on intermediates. However by the last lap the rear was spinning up everywhere and the Triumph got past him over the back of the track and try as he could to keep it upright out of the last turn still spun. When he came back in the brand new rear was shredded o the left side so is good now for the bin. Ironically on the last lap the heavens opened just after they went through and the track got wet .....now if only it would have happened the lap earlier.

Lisa was on slicks and she brought it home even doing her last bit of her lap in the rain so the throttle whisper was pleased, must have been his pep talk before she went out that helped.

Smarty then decided to go out on the R1 next race with slicks on it but that was short lived with it high siding him around Lukey on the first lap.. he then picked the bike up and pushed to the side of the track where it fell over in the grass.. he got in trouble from the Clerk of the course for digging up the grass... even though he had the forethought to get the fallen bike off the track so the race could continue and no one collected it. Seems safety in Victoria is not a priority at least not a P.I it would appear.

Race two was dry so out on the Mule and there was no way that pesky Triumph would get the better of the mule again however there was a ring in on a Suzuki powered Harris that was in the class but not in the championship which was flying but Smarty was hanging on to it so the bass was well happy. Needless to say he brought it home with no issues, lap times were down over the weekend for all but a few of the upper eshalon such as Bayliss and co.

Lisa came home in race two beating Lyndon so now she is a fully fledged member of BEARS she also didnít eat lapped and won a prize at the end of the day for best presented so she was well chuffed. She made a point of thanking her coach also so it was well worth him making the trip down and of course a weekend would not be the same without him to be honest.. but lets not tell him that hey.

I left the island just before 7 am in rain and channeled it for most of the first 150Kís or so then it stopped around Traralgon but was very cold as cloud cover. Kind of warmed up a wee bit getting into Cann River but not too bad, Great run up the Monaro to Bombala for a very late brunch then a chilly run up over the top. Made if from Cann River to Hume for fuel thatís like 285Kís or so. Then just about at Goulburn it started raining again and was fairly heavy in parts got in the door at home around 6.30 wet and cold but as usual the trusty RGS didnít miss a beat and in another surprise used only about half a pint of oil not the usual pint down there and another back malarky so hmm oh and that damn rear tyre still is not worn out... bugger its got well over 10K on it now bugger.

So all in all another successful weekend in most fort the TEAM aside from some minor damage ( if you call what was inflicted on the Pani minor however there was another one which went down on Sunday which really showed that Matties damage was minor in comparison )

Photos later I guess .

got a quick note from the team,

"1st race abandoned after 3 red flags in a row.
1st race- 3 laps red flagged (chopper medivac, broken back?)
2nd attempt- 3 laps red flagged

They are ok,

Would liked to have been there to watch the racing, but had to get my arse onto the road myself, riding back to Brisbane.

Go boys.

Back in Brisbane, but licking wounds.

Mobile camera got me at about 20kph over the 100 limit over Ben Lomond Range.

Candy car got me out of Casino, 26 over 100, 4 points and $444.... lucky Iíd slowed down when I saw a suspicious car parked on the side of the road  :o

Shaeza! Very expensive little bike ride CK! My daughter and I drove the road north from Grafton to Casino. We were sitting on about 120 when a guy on a Honda VFR passed us sitting on 140+ so I capitalised on the radar bait.
Far too easy to throw money and enjoyment away on the roads these days. 🏍🙀😿

Sorry to hear that Chris thats bad luck but you know it could have been worse... ::)
You missed out on seeing the Redax team take 3 wins today, sensational, Smarty was on fire and Lisa wasn't doing too bloody bad either, aided by Brett in the absence of the throttle whisperer, although in honesty
I think there were a few whisperes this weekend.
The Triumphs were kept at bay and the bikes ran like very loud Swiss clocks.
Everything seamed to go just as it should and if you stood in the background and watched, as I did it was seamless.
Great racing, great result and great to catch up with those who were there.
Well done to Red and all for the massive effort they put in and to the ACTers who turned up, Tom and Anthony, not a bad effort either, to drive 4 hours either way to see the Redax bikes in action is time well spent I reckon!
To those who didnt make it out there, well you missed out.
Thanks Red and all for a great weekend.
hope you managed to squeeze it all back into the van.
Cheers
Tom

Hmm Chris what were you thinking would have thought after the  chat with the boys in blue on the Putty that you would have taken it a tad easy as they say shit happens just that lighting usually doesn't strike twice.
So another weekend done and dusted at SMSP........and another eventful weekend courtesy of St George MC, we didnt get to acces the pits till 8.00pm Friday night to set up as some bloody German Emission cheating brand with the Olympic rings to blame.Good to see Ian bring Monty down, reckon he might well move from PCRA to BEARS rumour has it.

So our first race  for this weekend on Saturday and the BEARS F3,F$ and F5 were grouped with 600 Supersports. 3 laps in and one of them went straight on at turn two into the type wall and went up and over and landed at the fence. Choppered out with a suspected broken back seems the bango bolt on his front brakes came out... so restart two saw the race red flagged on first flying lap... restart three and red flagged again so race abandoned......bugger no points.  One of the BEARS high sided on the water seeping out of the track at turn 5 and broke both thumps, right foot and collar bone bugger. So not much racing yesterday for us.

Today we were out second race so another early start, Smarty brought the Mule home first in class so we clawed back 5 points, Lisa went really good on the Ducati and did a best time for the weekend of 2.00 minutes flat not bad for her first time at the creek even though she was without her coach and Ian looked to be enjoying himself and the other BEARS members certainly made him feel welcome.
Second race of the morning was Race 2 for the day saw Smarty again finish first in class it was a 15 minute one with no stoppages with the other Triumph coming in second so that helped with the points, 3rd race much the same.. again Lisa did well as did Ian. We had to then wait till the last race of the day and again Smarty brought the mule home first in class and the other Triumph finished second for a while we were a little bit worried as Fitzy showed the meandering Smarty a wheel on the straight so he had to up the game a bit even though he had a squirmy rear Tyre as he had left the new one in his shop in Darwin.

So means that we leaver Sydney now with a 1 point lead so looking forward to Broadford and hopefully Maurice running shot gun on black betty to ensure that the Triumph on onslaught are relogated to a best of thrid... so no pressure MT at all.

Thanks for the report, Brett. No other way of getting news without your pics and scribing. Great result you guys! Shame the chance to earn more points and stretch the champ lead was lost due to unfortunate incidents on track. At least the Redax mob kept it all safe.

Broady will be a snorker! ... and hopefully I can get there!

Speedy #28 promotes Ricondi in the best way Lisa can. While the Throttle Whisperer waits quietly in the background.

It has been communicated to me that Gary (Red) Cawte - Team Redax has indicated he will not attend the Laverda Club BBQ this coming Friday evening at Broadford if I am in attendance.

I have yet to see the actual reason or detail in the communication from Gary to the Victorian Laverda Cub President/Committee but it is common knowledge that Gary and I recently disagreed on some engineering points of fact. I have previously made my point on the Laverda Forum and that is sufficient in my opinion. Having said that, if the subject is brought up I will defend my position without fear or favour.

The BBQ is a ĎThank You' in appreciation of the QLD Clubís hospitality previously extended to the Victorian Club members.

As a Sponsor of the Victorian Road Race Championships / BEARS 2019 and on behalf of DAM Classic Racing I welcome all Laverda club members of QLD NSW and Victoria and encourage them to attend the Victoria Laverda Owners BBQ festivities, enjoy the spectacle, and experience the sound of the Redax Scorch Laverda on the racetrack.

I think this is a private matter and not for forum discussion.
Itís not for discussion, itís an invitation to Laverda owners of all States to attend the Vic Lav Club BBQ regardless of tribalism and the divisive nature of Garyís communication to the Victoria Laverda Club and other members.
Let's not intimidate anyone.
Itís an olive branch and a call for a bi-partisan approach to a common love of Laverda.

Yea, thanks Mark..
Looking forward to a great weekend.. (and a roady with Paulo..)
Had a bit of a moment sorting Monty.. new tyres fitted last week.. flat rear today.. :'( Pinched tube, so late refit required.
All good.. until fitting sprocket carrier, and the wheel bearing on left side fell out... :o
All good.. solutions in stock, and set to go now, but geez.. coulda done without that.

See yas at it...
