Title: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Is2 on December 18, 2014, 21:08
If you blokes are free, I'm going for a ride this Sunday, don't care what time or from where. Who knows might find a fern.

Sounds good to me. Where and when? Thought SA was a fern free state, or is that fruit fly free.

Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?

Nah mate,it weaves like a drunk. Not really rideable above a sedate pace.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Vince on December 21, 2014, 11:20
Ha Blab, thats defiantly not right. There not as stable as an SS but you should be comfortable hammering the crap out of it.How are the steering head bearing adjustment. It should swing freely with a slight bump on the end of the bar.One of the Sydney blokes had his slowly tighten while riding on a Wisemans run,it got scary stiff .Luckily I had a cut down shifter big enough to work the top nut.As far as I know there should be contact between the top nut and the bottom nut acting like a locknut.Thats what I think was not happening with Sash's bike but it hasn't been proved yet.Nipping the bottom nut to where it feels right and the tightening the top in my experience over tightens them. Its not easy to get it spot on first time.Hope its that simple.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: blab on December 21, 2014, 11:42
Nah Vince,Ive been through that, too tight and it tramlines at any speed.
They are probably a touch on the loose side at the moment.
In a straight line it starts to weave at about 140 and gets worse, havent felt safe going over 160.
In sweepers, anything over about 100 will induce a similar weave.
Its actually dangerous to ride semi hard.Add a mid corner bump and I will be all over the road and crashing.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Terry Dymond on December 21, 2014, 12:13
The only things I can think of Blab are the normal things to check: tyre pressures, steering head bearings, swingarm torque settings and wheel alignment.
Seemed to get progressively worse throughout the ride. Slow leak perhaps?
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: blab on December 21, 2014, 12:26
It was my enthusiasm for the bike that got progressively worse.
Slow down and get home before it kills you.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Vince on December 21, 2014, 12:39
Maybe up the damping setting in the rear,I had similar wollowing on the softer setting that was fixed going from 1 to 3 on my Icons. The ride I had recently on Brett's RGS had a pretty bad shimmy at 80kph,take your hands off the bars and it immediately went bigger,we were at that speed for a while and it was shaking my eyes a lot.Didn't happen at 60 or 100.Didn't want to diss the bike, till Brett tells be the front tyre is scolopped and warn out.Maybe you have a distorted tyre?
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: blab on December 21, 2014, 12:44
Maybe,but they are brand new.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: mcnicol on December 21, 2014, 13:07
Blab, when my Jota arrived from Pommyland, it seemed OK but felt like it would would tankslap at only about 80kph when I backed off after a quick start unless I did the grip of iron thing. I panicked about all sorts of possibilities, but a mate suggested balancing the wheels and tyres. I did, and the problems completely disappeared, bike was rock solid up to any speed I was prepared to go to.
Even though everything's all new on yours, something as simple as a balance weight falling off could account for the problem and be one of these things that just happens. Fairly cheap and easy to try, anyway.

I might try a set of BT 45's on it.But thats another 350 bucks on top of a bike I paid 34k for.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Grant on December 21, 2014, 13:43
Blab, what model is it?
What make and sizes of tyres are fitted?
I assume they are brand new seeing as you paid top dollar for it. Worn tyres can cause all sorts of issues, as can tyre pressure.
What tyre pressures?
What type of shocks and what eye to eye shock length?
Standard for a triple is 365mm.
Try different tyre pressures, try raising the forks through the yokes half an inch or so if the bars allow this.
Head bearings too tight or even too slack?
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Brett on December 21, 2014, 19:40
Vince the front tyre wasnt scalloped before you rode it... no just jokin guess hadnt noticed it/worried about it until you mentioned it as all the RGS ( I own or have owned )  tend to do it when the front tyre starts to wear. The tyre on the RGS has over 10K on it I worked out the other day so is ready for the bin.
Will try to have a new one on it by the next time you ride it. Maybe I will fit that damn junk K81 of the 3C, no just joking. Two new front tyres coming up me thinks wink wink Santa.  ;D

Blab what tyre pressures are you running at the moment, think you need to check all the simple things first before shelling out for new tyres. Go over the basic's, pressures, balance etc.. The bike had a complete rebuild so you should also go over all the bolts now it has bedded in, swingarm, rear shocks, axle nuts, steering head bolts etc.....

Oi, don't you be dissin' those TT100s. I use them on most of my bikes to good effect (though I wish the rears would last a bit longer  :-X they handle fine and a lot better than the BT45s I've got on the Mirage. What pressures you been running them at? Too high and they'll be all over the place...

I was waiting for someone to say that. I've always thought mine was very stable at speed and couldn't fathom the odd derogatory comment on here. Maybe I just don't know any better :-[
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Vince on December 22, 2014, 00:56
Hard to believe on an old style slow steering bike but you can make them handle horribly with out of wack settings.I was trying to stop some fork patter just running around town on mine.So I decided to back the preload off the Emulator spring expecting a softer action. These springs are set at 2 turns from touching, not so easy to pick the starting point.I thought I had found it and then went to 1 turn. What I ended up doing was stopping its progressive action altogether. It made it a lot worse.Ended up fixing it with 10wt going up from 5wt.Fixed the really hard, ended up being bottoming Maz shocks on the Pantah, before cheching the cable ties I thought I needed softer springs, what it did need was heavier ones.First port of call is cable ties on the fork and shock shaft, the later cut with a finger nail clipper, these give you travel data to see whats happening.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Cosi on December 22, 2014, 06:24
Not really Vince, when you introduce a multitude of settings as opposed to the minority that the bike was designed with then it takes that much longer to set up, combine that with a lot of us that ride newer bikes also and then all of a sudden we start to expect more from the old girls, don't get me wrong, Peters bike was as dangerous as what it sounds like Blabs bike is at the moment, ask Bevelman, but rest assured Stevie it can all be fixed, mine however is handling like a dream  :P

Cosi a lot depends on what you know.I had some work done on my Husky 250,heavier springs and shim changes for my weight but didn't want to pay the $70 that Terry Hays charges after he works on them to set the clickers. It was horrible but got better after weeks of ruined riding time playing with them.Next time I payed the $70.
5 minutes of watching me on a small loop had it dialled in  treat. It was climbing out of ruts in the corners in the end, that was sorted by pulling the forks through 1 mark = 3mm.After that is as brilliant.Railing the bends .Such a tiny change,3mm made a hell of a lot of difference.

With hard shocks he'll be experiencing pounding on his bottom. Perhaps time to trade it in for a RGS. :D

I'll betcha the frames bent. If a bike won't track in a straight line 9 times out of 10 it's because the wheels can't. Mine was twisted out of shape because the previous owner liked chucking wheelies. Dave Kellett, who straightened it, reckoned every Laverda he'd ever seen was bent to the shit house. Worth the bucks getting it checked out and it can be done with the engine in. You could string line the wheels just to get a rough idea.

Had your wheels checked for true? That cheesealloy bends easy as and while they may appear true to the naked eye may actually be well out.

Good point: will check mine too over christmas. Front end feels skittish for some reason with extra vibes coming through the 'bars which I hadn't noticed previously.

No weaving here though: even up to the Ton ;D. Peter-E (not the one in Rollerball :o) and I also noticed the front end topping out a little too easily of late. Would that be a function of too little rebound damping (Gold emulators fitted) or too thin or too little oil? are the Emulators easy to adjust? What should I look out for? Wilbers on the back seem fine and no tightness or play in the steering head bearings.. Wheel bearings were fitted by Gavin Spencer.. uh oh.. may have just answered my own question :o :o :o  Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow ::) ::)

Topping out implies your ride height is to high or in other words not enough sag with you on it.Do the cable tie trick and see how much sag you have.It should be around 30 or 40 mm or 1/3 the full travel.Maybe to much spring preload, its usualy 15mm,more makes it bloody hard to get the caps back on .Are you sure its topping and not bottoming.Cable tie helps quantify used travel on bumpy roads and under brakes as well.

Hi Scrumps
The spacer is there, however, I fear the bearings are now well and truly shot for having been hammered in over powder coat paint.. They were a bit notchy when I checked for the spacer over a year ago: I haven't used the bike since and have a set of bearings ready to put in... Might as well do it this week...

Yeah it is, but I still find it hard to resist a Beesting from Otto's and a chop and beer from one of the pubs when passing through on the annual trip. And the leather guy sells bloody well made gear. Alpacca jumpers are now too exxy but.

The leather guy unfortunately passed in the middle of 2013 @ 65 old, one of the boys and the wife are keeping it going.
I guess my earlier comment comes from having lived and worked in and around Hahndorf for the last 40 odd years, and seeing the changes over that time, I'm sure anyone who lives in a touristy type town gets pissed of from time to time.

Any how try the Haus across the road from the Inn and 50 metres up the road for a feed and beer.

Ride was great able to stretch their legs a bit, 4 bloody triples certainly attract some attention, most I've ever seen together in the flesh,  first stop pub closed, bastards... covered about 160 k's.
I have some pics that I will post later. He's welcome any time.

While Blab and I were waiting for the others, another orange Laverda triple went past.

I know where you are coming from. We used to live in Esperance. Used to be a tiny, remote coastal town and a great place to live. Mining boom and tourists, a hell of a lot of whom decided to stay, combined with a council pushing for "progress" at all costs put an end to that and I haven't been back for 10 years. Can't stand it the way it is now.

I'll be on the Bandit, and I'll be on my best behaviour - don't wanna lose my licence and screw up the OS trip plans, now that I've parted with almost AU$5K for the lease Peugeot 308................

Hey boys, hope you all well.  2 months into the OS odyssey.
IoM TT was awesome. Met Cam Donald, McPint, Hutchie and Bruce Anstey amongst others.
Took heaps of photos that I will get to upload at some stage once they are resized.
Assen TT was pretty amazing, too.
Have seen quite a few Guzzis, and no Laverdas, but I swear I heard a triple heading up the mountain at Douglas on IoM.  Sounded like series 1 pipes....ie loud.
On the way back from Vienna to France.  Be around Poitiers for Bastille Day.

All going well but hemmorhaging money, as you do on holidays.

Hope blab's front end woes are fixed by now.

Actually, Terry, this trip has made me resolve to spend up and finish the Le Mans 'Carbon Cafe' project, by getting the engine back together, whacking on some Keihin FCR flat-slides, seeing if a grafted on late model R6 front end will work and finalising a new cafe seat to hold the Li-on battery and relocated electrics.  Fuck it, it's only money, and you can't take it with you.

Take the X-75. You won't be bothering Red with that one.

Well, who gives a shit really? This is a Laverda forum.

OK, I've posted non-Laverda stuff myself, but I've never expected a sensible response.

Anyway, if you want to get pedantic about Meriden stuff, I think the Hurricane was a BSA Rocket 3 motor in a Triumph frame, and badged as Triumph. Hurricane anoraks might prove me wrong, but I don't think I'll lose any sleep if they do.

Rocket-3; the only Triumph component was the sticker on the tank/seat unit..
The T160 engine is actually the Rocket 3 motor with a couple of slight changes to the outer casings; the Rocket 3 can be adapted for an electric starter similar to the T160 : not sure about the T150s but the Hurricanes and all the T160s were built at the Small Heath factory.

I personally like all bikes, except Hogglys (not the bikes, the attitude) and what the Ned Kelly impersonators laughably call cafe racers. But I digress, maybe we should restrict the forum to all Laverdas, as long as they are orange. (TIC)

Same here Terry. I find all bikes interesting. My "who gives a shit" comment was tongue in cheek. I really like the look of the T160, and have occasionally thought about buying one, but no bargains have come my way. Never been very keen on the Hurricane. It's a bit too stylised for my taste. A triumph (pun intended) of form over function.

Good, need a lease 2 rides, now just need to Blab to plan an RDO one more email & may get 4 lavs.

As for the forks, I just did my yearly major service, new fork seals etc. put it all back together, then decided Fuc it, I didn't like the way a 100 mm section of chrome was scuffed below the dust covers, that and having a set of seals last about 4,000 K's I sent them off for re-chroming & straightening if needed. Mind you I did put them on the V blocks and the dial gauge reading's were 0.03 & 0.16 mm.

Post by: AndyW on August 18, 2015, 00:20
I cant believe how complex the system is to fit.

A rubber mallet is your friend.

I've found it easiest this way:

1)  fit the centre header to the collector and place roughly in position with the collector resting on a brick or jack or something; head/rose nuts finger tight, header to collector moderately tight
2) fit the silencers to the collector and frame mounts; again very loosely
3) fit the outer headers and tighten all rose/header nuts to 'moderately' tight (ie still some give left)
4) jack up the collector to where you want it to sit; a few thumps here and there with the mallet to relieve tension and for headers/silencers to sit correctly in the collector joints.
5) tighten all header nuts and clamps; remove jack: job done. total time 1/2 hr  8)
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Terry Dymond on August 18, 2015, 00:49
Variations on the theme (or the way I do it :o):
Fit the three headers into the collector; spread the headers so they roughly line up with the exhaust manifold. Place a straight edge across the three header inlets, ensuring that it lays flat across the three inlets, this is important, ensures that no undue pressure is put on the three collector inlets.
Offer up the assembly to the exhaust manifolds, do up the nuts finger tight (don't put the new 'O' rings in just yet).
Get down on your knees and wiggle the collector from side to side and make sure the collector is centred (I measure the distance between the collector and the centre-stand mounts). Again, this is important; otherwise the mufflers won't sit evenly.
Fit the mufflers and adjust until they are symmetrical, now tighten the muffler nuts and clamps.
If happy with the result, remove the exhaust manifold nuts and pull the whole exhaust system forward so there is just enough room to slide the 'O' rings in, once in, tighten up the nuts and stand back and admire your good work (congrats).
I'll inspect your handiwork on the next SA fern search ride ;).

Please all be careful when riding in the Adelaide hills. I was out this weekend and witnessed a motorist throwing a number of Razor blades and screws onto the road. I was parked at the Gorge reservoir lookout checking out a burnt out car when I heard it. I cleaned most of them up and informed SAPOL but just be extra careful. Can't say I'm surprised and I don't condone it but think that act was aimed at cyclists. Gorge Road resembles a stage of the Tour de France on the weekends, not helped by 'peletons' taking up a whole lane and refusing to let anybody past.
That lookout can also resemble a MotoGP starting grid at times.
Although I live on Gorge Road, I stay well clear on the weekends except when I'm in the fire truck on the way to scrape some wannabe off the road. :(

Won't be back in Oz until late September, so will miss the ride.
Then on 27th I hope to ride the new 800cc triple from MV Agusta - the Tourisme Veloce.  Marty has set his heart on one so riding on his behalf as he won't be back from OS until after that date.
Toured the MVAgusta factory and saw bikes being built and was very impressed with the setup.

Also witnessed an F4 1000 RC (top of the line) on it's 6km run-in and test cycle on the rolling wheel.  They opened the door to the dyno room and we heard it on full noise for a couple of minutes.  Glorious noise.  The tour group stood and applauded at the end of it.  Pure bike porn.  The guy who gets to do this day in-day out has the best job in the world, in my humble opinion.

Like maps, or when at sea, charts. Not a fan of those newfangled electronic gizmos, less distraction the better when on the move. Like to stop by the side of the road and unfold the map and try to figure out wherethefuckarewe. Guess I'm just an old fart ::)

Electronic gizmos are handy for telling you which way to go at an intersection, but you can't beat a map for planning the route in the first place.

Well, you are a retiree..........
GPS's are great when the mapping is good, but fuck me if southern Italy and then Lake Como area in the north appeared to have been mapped by a crack smoking lunatic.  Sent us round in circles at one stage.
But lots of Europe is rapidly changing, roads-wise, so any paper maps are also out of date even before they have been printed.

Most certainly is, 'Legs', but a good one to have.
Fully expect Bandit and Guzzi batteries to be dead when I return and at least one of them incapable of being resuscitated knowing my luck.....
But I have at least got Marty thinking about re-registering the RGS, which is a good thing.

Leave Europe next Tuesday and then 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur to do the jetlag recovery and have a look-see, and then home 27th.

It's been a long trip and will be glad to sleep in my own bed for the first time in 5 months.
It will end up being over 32,000 flight kilometres and 22,000 on the road.

I have had the same Doctor for the last 45 years, he is in his 70's now and still going strong
real old school as well, go and see him say with an aching arm/elbow, just tells me I am getting old and to harden the fuck up
am going to miss him when he retires, hard to find a decent Doctor these days, seems to be all medical centres now and your Doctor is picked out of a roster of who is on duty

I hit a tumbleweed on the Hay Plains years ago, you know when there's a strong wind and the buggers cross the road like chickens.

Pulled up for a smoke and there was an acrant (  ??? is that the word I'm looking for) burning smell. I looked at where the smoke was coming from, the headers, and there it was. A smouldering tumbleweed.

Lucky I stopped when I did.  (blob!)

ON, got the starter motor apart, appears the seals I was sold a while ago were the incorrect internal diameter, which accounts for the oil collection under the starter, off to the local friendly bearing and seal shop.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Terry Dymond on November 22, 2015, 21:07
The fitted seal ID was 1mm oversize, no wonder the starter motor was full of oil. Anyway Ian, got seals from 'SA Bearings and Maintenance Supplies' in Mt Barker, now my supplier of choice.

'SA Bearings and Maintenance Supplies' in Mt Barker,

Nice new shop, much better than were they where a year ago. The bloke in there has always been helpful.

Now just need to find a local supply for proper 12v electrical terminals, the ones that crimp the insulation as well.

Snap!

Me too, just going to pay it's first registration on "Special Interest" (>30 years old) plates today.

I've owned it for 25 years. It's never been restored but I've done a few practical mods over that time, including Gold Valve emulators, YSS rear shocks, Ignitech ignition, braided brake lines, shortened centre stand, "case saver" chain guide, gear gazer, and maybe a couple of others I've forgotten about.

Most recent mod was the addition of a side stand (not shown in the photo below) which I should have done years ago. Makes life so much easier.

Cheers,
Cam

Sorry about the thread hijack  :-[

Mine too. It's called patina. Lower fairing on mine is nearly worn through on each side from scraping in corners (track days, not normal road use). It used to get a bit of a caning when I first got it, but I don't think I'll be doing any of that again with the poor old thing. I tend to treat it a bit more gently in it's old age, not to mention my own old age  :(

That used to be code for 'throwing it down the road' Cam, anything you want to tell us? ;D
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Dellortoman on December 04, 2015, 03:50
Nothing to tell. It's just that the fairing is the first thing to touch when cranked over.

If you look closely at the photo I posted earlier, you can see a patch towards the bottom rear of the fairing where it's ground off to a bevel. I guess the bike is a bevel Ducati in more ways than one.  ;)

It's a bit of a design flaw in the fairing. There's a gap of at least 25mm between the fairing and exhaust, so with a slightly different shape it could be tucked in that much tighter and probably not scrape.

Terry 6 am'ish Sunday at the usual spot, Woodside. Most likely be in the high 20's at 6.

Cam,   nice,  loverly machine and very different ride to the Jota, I have wanted a bevel for a very long time and bought this one a few months ago and as its been pointed out it has err patina, but still a bit rough for my liking, its in for a sensible tidy up, respray etc and will still be ridden, not hidden.
Looking through its sketchy history this one spent a few years in Tassie.

Excellent ride by the South Aus mob on Sunday; met up at the Meadows bakery for buttered scones ::). Three Laverdas there; Ian, Blab and himself plus met a bloke (Tony) on a Guzzi Griso who asked if could join us for the ride. Headed off on the more obscure roads of the Flurieu Peninsular via Victor Harbour then back to 'The Garage' in Strathalbyn for liquid refreshment and to ogle the bikes for sale.
Was taken aback when Tony asked if he could park the Griso next to the Lavs, apparently some one brand clubs are sensitive as to who parks near them, hope nobody in Laverdaworld has that attitude.
Sure Ian will provide some photos as proof that we over here get out and about.

Now, that is how an 81 Jota should look, no indicators, no grab rail .................. superb. Just needs the hump seat and she's be perfect (IMHO).

Indicators are gay and the grab rail is one of the ugliest things I've seen on a bike. It matches the 81 fairing.
I am looking for a hump seat, letterbox seat will be for two-up riding.

Err, excuse me but the indicators and grab rail have no function.
As you might see, I dont give a shit about form.
Well, indicators indicate so they do have a function :o Not a great fan of them myself but as mine came with them then I like them to be functional and hope the tin top drivers see them.......................
The grab rail I find is very functional - use it to hoist onto the centrestand, tie down bags etc and I used to do a fair bit of two up riding and while it is great to have your better half romantically nestle into your back there are times when a pillion likes to sit up, feel secure and the grab rail is a very useful............ err........... grab rail.
And obviously I was going on your comments that the grab rail was as ugly as the fairing and I have always found the fairing extremely functional. Obviously not appreciated by some onlookers, but each to there own hey......... I get that, some don't like it ::) but most long term owners appreciate it for what it is...............
So as I said...................................  ;)
(And not having a go at your bike, looks great................but gotta defend stuff that works)

Well,,,, we're all entitled to our own opinion. If we all thought the same what a boring fukin' world it would be.
Anyway I reckon I've been very lucky to get a low mileage pretty much untouched as it left the factory, with an almost complete history from the time it was purchased from Enzo's, Jota. And that's the way it will stay for now.

Yes there are some styling cues that I'm not overly fond of, but it is what it is. I'm not a rivett counter but appreciate its originality.

Its called patina. :)

Good lookin bike Ian, (actually meant to say earlier I like the look of all 3 Lavs in that pic..)
Absolutely agree, each to his own and I don't do rivet counting..........(have had people tell me all sorts of rubbish about my bike with many not knowing about differences within the same model run ::))

Just took Wickhams Hill Rd from Mclaren Flat Rd up to visit Geoff Hardy's K1 Winery. Fantastic bit of switchback road, good surface then a bit of good dirt road to the winery for a fantastic Pinot. Drooled about riding it rather than driving.

Drove near your place to Chain of Ponds winery, wines could have been good but impossible to tell as they were served at room temp on a 40 degree day. A touch volatile to say the least.

Kindly organised by a local Rotary Club.

The Italian Motorcycle Club of Tas gathers at around 9am on the first day of the month at Salamanca place in Hobart for our ride days (if you're ever in Hobart at that time, wander down and say hello). We had to seek permission from the city council to park in what is normally a pedestrian mall. The British bike club guys saw what we were doing and decided to add their numbers to the throng of bikes. It gets a bit crowded when the weather is nice and everyone drags their bikes out. There's often a bit of Italian vs British banter, but it's all friendly. They're a nice bunch of blokes with some interesting bikes.

Take your bike along to Hahndorf Terry. Show them what a proper triple looks like  ;D

Sorted. Have tried a different Hills winery every trip for the last 5 years. Apart from Peter Seppelt we have not had a real lot of luck so next year we are going to spend more time sucking down the slops at Yalumba before heading straight to the Vales.

The Hurricane was built around the BSA Rocket 3 engine, which is a bit different to either of the Triumph Trident incarnations (T150 and T160).

I've been led to believe there's a small minority of oddballs who like that Vetter styling. All I can say about it is that it doesn't appeal to me. I never liked Vetter's fairings either. Most of them are butt-ugly but apparently they worked quite well.

Prototype was badged as a BSA but for some reason management went with the Triumph name in production.

In the time between the arrival from the USA of Craig Vetter's prototype and eventual production some 2 1/2 years later, BSA went bust and were bought out by Triumph. About 1170 bikes were made at Small Heath and 'finished' at Meriden (stickers put on) in '72 before Triumph also ran into financial trouble in '73...

there was to have been an upgraded model for the '73/74 model year featuring electric start and disc brake but they didn't quite get there due to sluggish sales  (of everything..) and the subsequent workers' sit/lock-in :o

It's an interesting engine (both BSA and Triumph variants) in that it's the only multi (ie. more than 2) cylinder motorcycle engine that I'm aware of with vertically split crankcases.

Did you measure the full advance degree, not just trust the curve setting.

What does curve 7 dmc max out at ?
Mate I've been down this path with my 750 same blueing pipes, found faulty sacshe box running 46 degrees max adv  :o

Hard to determine the timing marks on this bike (I put a strobe on it last week): Brett seemed happy with it. Might have to get me another degree wheel and start from scratch.
DeWitt 'manual' says max advance 37deg at 6000 for curve 7. Have only bee in the 2500-4000 range mostly tho  (20-30deg).

37 at 6k thats alot of advance.... nice for a 750 but..... a triple more happy rnd 28/32 me thinks, pending state of Toon  ;)

"Pay ta re-check marks and verify with strobe"  top idea mate !  may be close to but...... heats an engine killer  :(

Ha. Never heard anyone say "stands up". But I've never been on a Ulysses ride.  :D

An old navy man like Terry might be more familiar with "cast off".
Maybe "chocks away" or "gentlemen start your engines" for those of other persuasions.

More common among people I've ridden with is "For fuck's sake stop gas-bagging and get on your bike. We want to get there some time today"
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?

'Stands up' is a term I came across when attending a charity run organised by an armed forces club, means that you must be ready in all respects at the given start time.
Our runs normally start from the Leather Shop in Hahndorf; I grab a coffee, Ian checks his bike out and reports 'It’s all good' and when Andy arrives we discuss the latest motorcycle disasters which usually involves a bit of tinkering in the gutter much to the amusement of the passing tourists.
When we finally have our shit together we try to decide where to go, either south into the Fleurieu Peninsular or north up towards the Murray.
Wouldn't have it any other way, enjoy the laid-back unpredictability.

Never heard the term 'cast off' in the Squadron, we used to cast off lines forward and aft.

(idea) Been thinking for a while about suggesting a ride meet, week/weekend for us Aussies.

Meet and camp at Bourke NSW - 8 hours from Melb, Syd, Bris, Adl. Sealed roads from each of the pre-mentioned.
Tas and WA is a little further, but that shouldn't matter too much.

This is a good place to camp, out of town as to not annoy the locals too much: http://www.kidmanscamp.com.au/bourke/

Any thoughts?

Post by: Dellortoman on October 13, 2017, 05:14

Not a bad idea Chris, I'd almost be tempted to make a trip of it. But 8 hours from each city is a bit optimistic, unless you're in the habit holding the throttle wide open once you're clear of town limits.

I've found Google maps times to be a reasonable estimate. The times according to Google are ...

12:20 from Adelaide via A32
10:54 from Melbourne via B87
9:15 from Sydney via B55/A32/B71
10:19 from Brisbane via Kamilaroi Hwy/B76

Those are all the fastest routes. If you want to travel on secondary roads it'll take longer.

I dunno about you blokes, but my old bones aren't up to doing 12 hours in the saddle in one day like I used to when I was a young whipper-snapper. If I were doing it, I'd break each of those trips into 2 days. Allowing a couple of days at the camp to get over hangovers, It's almost a week's trip. Plus a couple of days extra for me on the boat from Tassie.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?

I am having reservations about the coming Tassie ride,10 days straight is quite a bit more than what we usually do even if the Tassie days will be a bit shorter. Bloody hate long straight roads these days but there imposable to avoid.

Long straight roads in Tassie are hard to find and worthy of note... If you want twisties try the Strahan to Queenstown road... :o :o :o

Isn't that where the  Mad Max movies were filmed and the By long straight roads, I was referring to any trips on expressways more than 2hrs long and we do a few of those as going there the better long way usually results in coming home the boring quick way. It's usually 2hrs at least from my place to any good bike road.
Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Legs on October 13, 2017, 08:06
yes, that's where they filmed the original Mad Max movie, there is a Mad Max museum there as well. The location where the tanker explosion scene is a stone's throw from the pub and they say that you can find bits of debris scattered around.
Two hours to the nearest good bike road :o. I've got to travel 100 metres; down the drive and onto the infamous Gorge Road.

That’s a shame: place always seemed busy though I guess her general clientele bought more coffee than petrol. Place would have had big overheads for a coffee bar. Can’t imagine it surviving as an independent servo for long...

nearly 8k's.[7.71 ?] at its longest, and can be cut up into 5 different circuits. 110 mill to build it. Apparently the hotel complex has all but 2 rooms that overlook the circuit. Have a look at their web site, The  Bend....

Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?
Post by: Legs on September 05, 2018, 23:05
G'day earemike,
Usually meet up in Hahndorf and make a decision then but we usually head out to the more open roads that aren't frequented by the usual 'go fast mob'. Sometimes we do the southern loop down to Delamere, across to Victor Harbour and north up Bull Creek Road.
Up north, through Angaston and north of Truro to Kapunda and Eudunda.
East over the ranges down to Palmer then up to Mt Pleasant or further north through Sedan and Cambrai to Eden Valley.
We stay well away from Gorge Road and Lobethal Road though, too many idiots and cops.
Think I've let out too many secrets ::)

Thanks for the heads up - I haven’t hit the gorge since the ‘90s, got away from there before the police went OT.

Can’t say I’m go fast mob but wouldn’t mind seeing a few Laverdas on the road 😬

So, am looking at still riding over, any chance you SA blokes want to catch up for a feed and beers on the Thursday night? I just can't do CV.

Had an interesting trip back following Andy's GPS thingy, unfortunately he had it set to 'Most Direct Route', ended up on single lane roads in the middle of nowhere. To be known as "Andy's very interesting tour of the backblocks of western Victoria".

Enjoyed the time riding over and back with a few beers in between.

The ride home was something else, like riding around in circles [at one stage we did] BUT at the end of it the trip home was 40 Ks shorter, well done Andy ;)
Fuck I was buggered by the time I got home.

Hi Legs, can you do the Old Rd technic and just not accelerate between bends maintaining corner speed up there where its heavily policed just like the Sydney version. That's still huge fun in the 80k zone on the big hill at the south end of the Old Rd, the huge section north of that being 60ks has a big risk passing cops heading the other way. Staying at and below 60ks almost has the pushbikes passing you. So what's the usual speed limit there and can you still have some fun?

Title: Re: Ferns in S A ?

G'day Vince, happily most of the roads around my way are posted at 100kph. Once past the 100km radius of Adelaide most roads are 110.
We have a few roads around where it's relatively safe to sit 10-15 kph above the limit. Anything 30 or over the limit is licence losing.
Take your point that maintaining cornering speed within the speed limit can be as rewarding as the 'point and squirt' that most riders get sucked in to.

Forgot to mention that I had a bit of a scare whilst stopped in Gumeracha for a coffee and the paper: Georgina Downer was across the street, campaigning for the upcoming election. Bloody glad she didn't approach me as I would have given her a mouthful which would have spoilt both of our days!

100kph, thats a crazy speed. How lucky you are, everything bike good is 80ks around here and less on the Nasho and Old Rd both with a lot of cops and 60ks

Sure am (though until I'm back in Adelaide I'm not 'home' yet..). Have to say that I could get used to life in quarantine (Radisson hotel in Sydney CBD) quite easily. Got out of Mali just in time for all sorts of reasons; political unrest; fewer and fewer flights available back to Aus; Borders likely to close even tighter etc etc. Still not sure whether I'll be flying or driving back from Sydney...

Bloody hell! The way things are going in NSW, Andy may not be able to get back. The SA/NSW border was supposed to open on the twentieth, now it's been put on hold until further notice.
Another 14 days in South Aus Andy?

Jump a freight train, like the 4 Mexicans did, better watch out for the dog squad when you get to Adelaide.
But then what would I know :-X
