Title: Bike of the Month - November 2012
Post by: Scrumpy on October 30, 2012, 21:02
Some months I struggle to find the inspiration to search out new bikes to feature. There is one person currently on this forum who is turning out great looking bikes like they have come off a production line. So I approached him and he kindly agreed to supply me with photographs of them. We have all admired Grantís work so now you have the opportunity to vote for your favourite. Thanks Grant.
So many photographs to pick over I am sure to have got a few mixed up. Any way Iím sure you will point them out to me.

Happy voting

Scrumpy

A fabulous selection of triples - credit indeed to Grant, bloody well done!  8)
A difficult choice to pick just one, but I managed....

BTW, the Jarama and 3CL are one and the same. Grant?

Didn't know whether to point that out to Scrumpy or not!
Was just going to say nothing and see how the voting went on it/them  ;D ;D ;D

Well, at least this month I am guaranteed a winner! :P :-*

As is the orange and the green 3c if im not mistaken

I like the green one daddy

Post by: Scrumpy on October 31, 2012, 09:53
I spent some time looking at the Jarama/3CL pics and couldn't find any differences. The only difference I thought I could see was in the colour. As the 3CL did not have any votes I was able to remove it.

I kept both orange and green 3C to which colour was preferred.

There was no plan to try to deceive anyone.
I was quite clear to Scrumpy about the bikes.
It's a simple vote for the one that takes your fancy.

I go for the orange 3C, even itīs not a Jota.. :(
Funny mixture, no Jota but RGS?
Title: Re: Bike of the Month - November 2012
Post by: Grant on October 31, 2012, 18:58
I'm not a big Jota fan. My stable of bikes is a mix of what I like and what is available in Spain. No RGS models were imported to Spain I think. The 'newest' triples I have found here are around 1980 vintage.

My favourite triple is a stock 1200 with 4C cams and Jota silencers.
Not a big fan of the RGS either but the Corsa is a great exception.

C'mon Cosi, wake up at the back.
It is a UK Mirage spec.
1116cc low comp pistons make it nice and flexible, without the peakiness of a 981cc high comp Jota

Green 3C for me ....................... sans the side stand.
Orange 3C come is no 2 .................. sans the "same" side stand.

Ooops, in the 1st pic, Super Green was missing from the pack:laugh:    I reckon Gert could fix that!

For me it was either the green 3C or POP. A tough choice, Grant has done great work on all of these bikes. Went for the special.

Green 3C.
Bars set just like I like to see them, too.  Really adds an aggressive look to early, unfaired Laverdas, and is something which is lost on newer bikes without the adjustable bars.

Hey Gert, please also add a front/right flasher to #9, otherwise I can't give her my vote!
Joking apart, I love the way Grant approaches to the restoring of Laverdas, he's a step ahead, and this step is simply Passion.

Maurice, you don't know the half of it...  :o
I work on them 7 days a week, up to 8 hours a day.
One sold, one almost sold, another up for sale, and I am about to start on the next one tomorrow.
3 more in the back of the garage once that one's finished.

Happy as a pig in the sticky stuff.

i can't believe so many voted for a colour - that's what my wife would do!
to me POP is the clear winner because of the careful and innovative thought that has gone into her which has kept the original concept and look, but updated the behaviour. absolutely fantastic work, grant, a superb execution!

I voted for the Green 3C too.

I have a question:
Why would a lower compression Mirage be a better driver than a Jota?
If you put a higher comp piston and a modern ignition, would that not have the best of both worlds?
Title: Re: Bike of the Month - November 2012
Post by: Grant on November 06, 2012, 18:17
More fuel-dependent, more peaky.
A low comp 1200 has a softer power delivery and thw bigger cubes just make it sweeter, in my humble opinion.

I have the luxury of a gas station that sells 100 octane just down the street.  In Socal the onion water that passes for gas is a huge problem otherwise.

Still doesn't make a peaky motor more civilised, just safer/more reliable.

Guess what Grant is trying to explain is like comparing a big-block Chevy with 150bhp with a 3.5l Porsche.  The Porsche may be more fun for most, but is far more demanding, in many aspects.  The Chevy is just easy to live with, like a low-comp Laverda triple... ;D

So all things being equal, (cams, ignition, carburation) having high comp pistons makes the motor peakier?
Title: Re: Bike of the Month - November 2012
Post by: 3patC on November 06, 2012, 22:57
I dont like the low compression 4C combination, but I do like the high compression A11 combination.
Title: Re: Bike of the Month - November 2012
Post by: Grant on November 07, 2012, 08:07
High comps + 981cc is peakier than 1116cc and low comps. (to me)
Less flexible, less relaxed, more fuel-sensitive.

Well I would say the cams do that not the h.c. pistons, mind you I'm no expert but I did years ago have a 3C with A11 cams and hc pistons and it was the best running Laverda I have ever ridden. Not at all peaky just raring to go.
The green Mirage ith 4C cams I had at the same time was nowhere near as enjoyable to ride.

Very cool bikes both of them!

Julian, it's one and the same bike.
I bought is as an orange 3C as that was my first Laverda.
Then, one day, I tried the green kit on it and liked it more.
No attempt to try to hoodwink anyone here, just to vote for the one they like the best.
If I can find another 3C I have even bigger plans for it...  ;)

The red-orange Jarama is what my bike should be, had I not modified it, but that green 3C really appeals to me the most. Looks as though I'm not alone in that. All are fine examples, Grant.
