Poll

What do you all think of a NALOC rally in 2018? Here are a few options.

Join up with an established Ducati ride May 4-6 along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Hold our own event in SW Wisconsin and ride the Driftless alphabet roads, timing May-Julyish
Pick a AHRMA event and hang out with our race buddies for the weekend.
Come up with another idea, we have time.

2018 Naloc Rally Poll #1
« on: November 29, 2017, 16:36 »
Hi there,
Time to get started on planning the NALOC 2018 rally. I will also direct you all to join the facebook page that Shamrock set up for more discussion and exposure to other Laverda owners in North America.

I will run a series of polls here and as we get more and more inputs we can decide where and then when we want to hang out.

Thanks for your support,
Bob

I owned a farm right in the middle of the alphabet roads outside Madison, Wisconsin.  Sold it (stupid!!) - trying to move back.  Best to aim for June - May can be unpredictable weather wise...as in snow.  There is a huge bike event called "Rockerbox" that's now held at Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - big vintage bike presence...July maybe?  Might be something to add to a rally agenda.

North America is a large place. Maybe it is time to have some regional chapters so that we can organise a bit closer to home  ....... otherwise anyone who can not or will not be able to come to a National event may lose interest.

I would love to come to a national event but at least 6 months would be needed to plan for such an event and one year would be better. Perhaps for your first National event it would be best to focus on making plans for year 2.

Outside of this thread and the poll, conversations-wise it seems like regional happenings is going to be the best bet for 2018.

Road America is like a second home to me since childhood, track days in cars, racing schools, race licensing and watching AMA and the Brian Redman Classic, and I have been to Rockerbox over the years in all its locations, just didn't make it to RA this last time. I like to go there to cheer on my AHRMA friends. I started and ended my racing career there. That's a good option for the midwest 2018 event. I am tempted to drag IAG out with me to the Blue Ridge Parkway tho.

Keep the conversation going. I can plan to produce a rally kit that can help individual delegates host their own localized event for 2018, and per Jim I would like to hold a national event in the four corners (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah) in 2019 if that makes it easier for everyone to plan. I went to college in Ft Collins and we always find an excuse to get back to that are every year.

Coincidentally, my family is spending the holidays in a small town called Fairplay, CO south of Breckenridge and I have family and friends out there who can help scout rally options as well. I'm looking forward to getting in trouble with our 4runner in between skiing and watching logs burn. Look me up if you are out that way, I'd be glad to buy you a beer or two at the Fairplay Brewery in mid December.

Let's do this!

>I would like to hold a national event in the four corners (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah) in 2019 if that makes it easier for >everyone to plan.

If you'd like some assistance I live in Phoenix and have a list of owners in the area.  I've attended rallys in all 4 states.  I'm also co-chair of the Arizona Moto Guzzi rally and I'm used to setting up and organizing these things.  Hotels - banquets - promotion - etc.

Something to think about as you plan the rally.  How big of a rally do you want to have?

Do you want to have a large number of owners be able to attend? The 4 corners area is remote and Laverda owners are pretty scarce.  Denver is about 350 miles.  You have the Navajo Nation to the south, the mountains to the east and desert to the west.  Last fall's Guzzi rally in Ouray had maybe 15-18 attendees.  And there are a lot more Guzzi riders than Laverda riders.  My experience is a few will come from anywhere.  But the majority have work, families and other commitments.  So to hold a rally of more than a handful, you are going to need to have a large population base to draw from.  There are about 22 million people in SoCal, another 5 million in Phoenix and another 1 million in Las Vegas.  A combined population of nearly 28 million.  If your goal is to give more owners a chance to attend, you might search for a spot within a days drive of all 3.  Perhaps Southwest Utah.

Do you want a smaller rally?  Then the 4 Corners works.  Durango or Moab likely.  Denver, Albuquerque and maybe Phoenix will be your population centers.  A few will ride/trailer in from elsewhere.  The San Juan Mtns. are a lovely place to ride.

Best of luck and kudo's for putting this together.  Let me know if I can help.

Mike

Thank you Mike ..... you have articulated very well what I wish I could have said ........ and it reinforces my suggestion of several regional meets to start and then we can get more interest in a national rally.

cheers

After reading your “NALOC roll call thread” might I suggest southern Missouri or northern Arkansas for a rally point? There are 8 Laverda owners listed living within a 10 hour drive (trailer bikes) of Springfield Missouri and 5 others within 16 hours.

This may not be of interest to the east and west coast people but the 16 hours driving time listed above does include Ontario, Winnipeg, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Tamps Bay.

The Ozark Mountains in that area are great motorcycle roads. The Hub Motorcycle Resort in northern Arkansas is a great place. https://www.hubinfo.com

Bob – If this is something that would be of interest to you, I could help set it up.

It is encouraging seeing the effort in getting a rally together. With enough notice ie a few months I will do my best to attend from Northern California.

Hi Bob. Just submitted my answer to the poll question. Should we also consider seeing if we can join the 46th Moto Guzzi rally being held in Washington State on the 1st-3rd June 2018? Could be a good rally for the Canadian riders to meet up at.
Cheers.
Mike
