The painter I use did have the paint scanned and matched but gave it HIS paint reference code (to protect his interests).
I think somewhere I have a small bottle of 'touch up' paint he gave me in this colour, unused, but lost somewhere in the 80-odd boxes I have yet to unpack.
As I said the sidepanel, and bike, are long gone from me. Now living in sunny CA.

I bought this bike last week Paul. It has been repainted with smaller metal flakes but it looks really good in the flesh. The picture doesn't do it justice because it was taken on an old phone in miserable weather but all the same I like it. Regards Pat.

Yeah, Black wheels, the colour I said I didn't like a few weeks ago ha ha! They do look good on it though. Got to get rid of the Ducati front mudguard.

Hi Pat

where in the world are you located?

lovely bike, I do like the black wheels, not so sure about, the Jota hump seat. I do have a spare Jota seat and have put it on the 1200 but it is much  thicker than  the stock seat and raises me even higher than I want to be.

I'm in England Paul, the guy I bought it off had it for 7 years but sold it because of health problems. The bike is as he bought it from Slaters. Sounds nice but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. The seat needs some TLC but I've got a refurbished dualseat I can use on it too. I do like the green paint though. Regards Pat.

Hi Pat

I am sure you can see where this line of enquiry is going....

I am waiting for Wolfgang to get back from holidays to find out if he may have an original green painted Mirage part I can borrow to take and have the colour analyzed...

Hi all

does anyone know Richard Slater well enough that he might share the paint code or description of the Mirage green with them and then pass it on to me?Huh??? Maybe it is an old Ford Cortina colour or something..... Grin

I take Keith's point about the issues associated with trying to colour match from a laptop screen, but as I have never seen another Mirage in the flesh here in western Canada, the odds of being parked beside an original paint green Mirage to compare the paint would seem to be fairly unlikely!

Mine isn't the original paint, colourwise the nearest match I found years ago was from either an Austin Maxi or Allegro but the flakes were too small. I reckon the green Mirage bits that padlock had for sale were original. Where did they go? You could get a match off a sidepanel.

Hi All,

I’ve been following this Forum for a couple of years now but this is an early foray into contributing.  Please be gentle with me !!

I have a 1977 Mirage awaiting restoration.  It’s a very early one in the original Green.  Although the paintwork is ok I plan to have it resprayed to “freshen” it up during the restoration.

I sent a side panel to a local paint suppliers for analysis and they came back with a Green metallic from the 1975 BMW Motorcycle colour palette.  I don’t know the BMW code but from PPG it’s code is PPG0006.  They supplied a painted sample and it’s very nearly perfect - allowing for deterioration in the side panel over the last 30+ years and metallics reflecting different in changing light and angle.  My painter tells me metallics are notoriously difficult to replicate because of many factors such as gun pressure and settings, spray angle, paint build etc.

It’s a solvent based two-pack that you spray on the colour base coat first followed by a lacquer.  It’s quite expensive at £35 +VAT per half litre.  My painter reckons you might get a tank, two side panels and a ducktail from just over half a litre – but better get a litre just in case !

If anyone wants to PM or email me I’ll be pleased to get some more samples done for you and if we all agree we’ve cracked it.

The Yellow “Mirage” lettering on the side panel is painted on with a stencil. I have seen some Green Mirages with raised metal “Mirage” badges but I don’t know if they’re correct in period, or from a later model Mirage.  I’m sure someone out there knows the answer to that.  I don’t have a match for the Yellow yet but the paint suppliers advise it shouldn’t be a problem.   Making a stencil is quite easy if you have an example of the original lettering which we have.

Paul – I have to finish my restoration of a 1977 Jarota before I get onto the Mirage.  It’s going to be a while before I get the Mirage restoration to a point where I’ll need the panels for painting so if you cover the costs and promise to return it in a few months time, I’ll be please to send you a side-panel for you to do your own investigation.  PM or email me.

Hope this helps.

Paul.

Hi Paul

very kind offer. Where are you in the world?

the BMW folk are even more anal than us laverda nuts, lots of specific BMW info on the web     http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/paintcodes/greens.htm

from around 1975 looks like there was a Nuerburg green for the 75/76 R60/6 and R90/6, BMW code 577, a metallic Nuerburg green BMW paint code 077, a BMW green metallic BMW paint code 074 used on the 73/74 R50/5 and R90/6, and then there also was a bright Minz green I don't have a BMW code for...

the first photo attached in teh BMW green metallic BMW paint code 074

the second photo attached is the BMW Nuerburg metallic green, BMW paint code 077

this is really tough to do over the internet, but best I have at the moment. Have a look and see what you think.

I am going to have to find a local paint shop with 1975 BMW motorcycle paint colour charts and have a look in the flesh,I couldn't find any PPG charts online to check PPG 0006 in 1975 BMW green......

Hi Paul,

I'm in the UK.

I had seen the BMW site but realised it's nearly impossible to judge colours on a computer without the correct equipment. On the site there's a catalogue picture of 1975 fuel tanks showing the different colours available including the Metallic Green which looks right, but then so does the Nurburg Green which seems to have been photographed under a brighter light !

I couldn't find anything on the PPG site either.

If I send a side panel to you I'll also send an sample of the paint and you can judge for yourself.

Paul.

Slater has the yellow Mirage logo available as a sticker. That is what I used after painting mine.
